Former Indiana congressman and 9/11 Commissioner Tim Roemer appears to be on a short list of candidates to head the Central Intelligence Agency. Roemer, who is briefing President George W. Bush and Vice President Elect Joe Biden on “World At Risk: The Report of the Commission on the Prevention of WMD Proliferation and Terrorism today, was cited by the New York Times as potential successors to current CIA Director Michael V. Hayden. Also listed are deputy director Stephen R. Kappes, U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel and former CIA clandestine services chief Jack Devine. The Washington Post is reporting that U.S. Rep. Jane Harmon, retired Navy Admiral Dennis C. Blair and former deputy defense secretary John Hamre as other potential intelligence candidates for Obama.  John O. Brennan had been seen as a frontrunner for the job but has taken his name out of consideration. Asked by Howey Politics Indiana if he was being vetted by President Elect Barack Obama’s transition team for the cabinet, Roemer declined to comment. Roemer served six terms in the 2nd CD and drafted the legislation creating the 9/11 Commission, which he then served along with former Hoosier congressman Lee Hamilton. As a congressman, Roemer also led efforts to reform U.S. intelligence capabilities. The WMD Commission report says that the U.S. could be targeted by WMD in the next five years. “Osama bin Laden has mandated obtaining a nuclear weapon and use against the United States,” Roemer told HPI. “There’s a religous obligation to do this.” Watch for further analysis in Thursday’s Howey Politics Indiana.
