U.S. Rep. Baron Hill has an 11-percent lead over former congressman Mike Sodrel in a SurveyUSA poll released on Thursday. Hill leads Sodrel 50-39 percent. Libertarian Eric Schansberg takes 5 percent and another 5 percent are undecided.  Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released six weeks ago, Hill is up 2 points; Sodrel is down 3. Among women, Hill leads by 18 points, up from 9 points six weeks ago; among men, Hill leads by 5, unchanged from six weeks ago. Among voters age 18-49, Hill leads by 5; among those 50+, Hill leads by 19. Both Hill and Sodrel hold 8 in 10 of their partisan voters; independents, 15% of the electorate, favor Hill by 6 points, but 1 in 5 independents choose Libertarian Schansberg. The poll comes despite a potential shift in fortunes for the Republicans in Congress in a Gallup congressional generic survey, with the Democrats now leading the Republicans by just 3 percentage points, 48-45 percent. This is down from consistent double-digit Democratic leads over the past year. As is true for the current structure of voting preferences for president, Democratic voters are nearly uniform in their support for the Democratic candidate in their congressional districts (92%), Republican voters are nearly uniform in their support for the Republican candidate (94%), and independents are closely split, with 44% backing the Democrat and 40% the Republican.
