Waterman-Jehl ‘Miracle!’ Fails, Candidate Confides

Informed and reliable sources tell Howey Politics Indiana that State Sen. John Waterman (left) is telling associates that his drive to qualify his "Taxpayer Party" gubernatorial ticket for the November ballot has failed. That realization hit home when the ticket could only get 290 certified signatures from Allen County, home to his "running mate" Glenna Jehl, who lives in Fort Wayne. Waterman needed 33,000 certified signatures to qualify for the ballot. He was only able to get 540 from his home county of Sullivan. The source said that Waterman saw the lack of traction in those two counties as the "final nail in the coffin." No one was answering the phone at Waterman’s Shelburn home and his voice mailbox was full. The Waterman–Jehl ticket was a concoction of Indianapolis attorney John Price (right), who planned to use property tax repeal groups to gain the signatures.  The fall out from Waterman’s efforts to challenge Gov. Mitch Daniels will play out in both the Republican and Democratic parties. Some believe Democrat Jill Long Thompson missed a golden opportunity to split the GOP with the Waterman candidacy. Senate Republican leaders will have to decide whether to press sanctions against Waterman, though he already sits on the back bench and authors little legislation. The Knox County Republican chairman has already promised that Waterman will face a Republican primary challenge when he is up for re-election in 2010.
