A Survey USA Poll conducted on March 29-30 (530 likely, +/-4.3%) shows Jim Schellinger with a 41-39 percent lead over Jill Long Thompson. Another 20 percent were undecided. Another Suvey USA Poll showed Hillary Clinton leading Barack Obama 52-43 percent. Previously, the only media poll by Howey-Gauge had showed Obama with a 40-25 percent lead on Feb. 17-18, long before Obama’s first appearance on March 15 followed by nearly 20 visits by the Clintons. It comes as former President Bill Clinton conducts a swing through Columbus, Seymour, Bedford and Bloomington on Wednesday while Obama will be in Muncie on Friday. The gubernatorial deadheat comes as the first exchange over an issue occurred Tuesday in the Democratic primary race for governor. Jill Long Thompson called for a cap for sales taxes on fuels. Indiana is one of only seven states, including California, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Michigan, and New York that currently applies a sales tax to the sale of gasoline. Specifically, Long Thompson would place a trigger in state law that would automatically suspend the sales tax on the portion of sales price exceeding $2.75 per gallon. With the current average price of a gallon of unleaded fuel in Indiana at $3.25 a gallon, the move would save Hoosier motorists about $100 million per year. "Unfortunately under Mitch Daniels’ sales tax increase those that can least afford it are forced to pay more," said Long Thompson. "By suspending the sales tax on gasoline that is over$2.75 per gallon, this measure will help to take the burden off low- and middle- income Hoosiers." Her primary opponent - Indianapolis architect Jim Schellinger, responded by saying, “We all agree that the price of gasoline is out of control, but you can’t balance the books based on one side of the ledger, For the past three years, we’ve lived under Washington-style budgeting, where Mitch Daniels claimed he was fiscally responsible even though he balanced the 2005 budget on the backs of schools, homeowners and local governments. His brand of piecemeal problem-solving, which he must have learned from George W. Bush, is what helped get us in this mess to begin with. Instead of merely addressing the surface issue of the sales tax on gasoline, we need to address the overall issue of rising fuel costs and what we can do to lower that burden on Hoosier working families and businesses."
