Hoosier Republicans are beginning to coalesce around John McCain’s presidential campaign, though the Arizona Republican received advice for U.S. Rep. Mike Pence on the need to embrace the conservative agenda. Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter who serves as McCain’s State Chairman was joined by Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi, Indiana Republican Chairman Murray Clark, former Congressional candidate Brose McVey, Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita, and Indianapolis attorney Bob Grand. "John McCain is well positioned to appeal to voters across a broad spectrum and be highly competitive in November," Carter said. “His campaign in Indiana will be strengthened by this early support from leaders from former Republican presidential candidates, Romney, Thompson and Giuliani.” Brizzi, who was former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s campaign and finance chair in Indiana, noted that the former Navy aviator’s experience and background bring important national security credentials to his candidacy. "Senator McCain is a true American hero who will always put his country first." Rokita and Grand were key supporters of Romney. Grand added that McCain will be highly competitive. "McCain has shown perseverance and strength these last months that have paid off. This tenacity and drive will make him a strong competitor in November." Clark stressed the importance of having a unified front going into the fall campaign, “I’m excited to join this group of Hoosier Republican leaders in unified support for Senator John McCain as the next President of the United States. Senator McCain is a patriot, an American hero, and the principled leader this country needs at this critical juncture in history." Meanwhile, Rep. Pence gave advice to McCain at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington today. "You’ve claimed the Reagan mantle," Pence said of McCain. "Show us you know how to use it. Senator McCain, if you continue to embrace the right, the right will embrace you. And let me add, to my fellow conservatives here at CPAC and throughout the nation: If we are to ask this from our nominee, we must be willing to accept it when it comes. If we reject out-of-hand the good faith offerings of the candidates now as too little, too late, we destroy all chance for the candidate to make good on them." Pence said McCain needs to signal that the Bush tax cuts are permanent, fight big government spending, veto any bill with earmarks, roll back entitlement programs, secure the borders, appoint judges who will interpret the law, and stand "without apology for the sanctity of life."
